Being a part of the Translate Science community can mean many different things because the work of increasing multilingualism within the scientific enterprise by necessity engages diverse actors working in science. In our second panel discussion, the Translate Science core contributors are seeking to help our wider community understand different approaches by providing a platform for folks to share how they advance open and multilingual science in their current role. We hope that this event can shed some light on the issues that affect researchers in different regions and serve to bring together others engaging with them.
In this iteration of our Translate Science community meeting, we will be featuring two researchers in biology:
Humberto Debat
- Tenured researcher at INTA-Argentina.
- Studies the virus-host interface from a systems biology perspective.
- Technical manager of CIAP-INTA in the National Genomic Data System and has participated in the Argentine Project on SARS-CoV-2 Genomics.
- Member of the Open and Citizen Science Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Science of Argentina where he has contributed to the generation of a diagnosis and guidelines for an Open Science policy in Argentina.
- Founding member of eLife’s Global South Committee for Open Science
- Affiliate of the preprint server bioRxiv and co-creator of PanLingua, a multilingual preprint search tool intended to enable search and global access to machine translations of all preprints hosted by bioRxiv.org
- Engineering undergraduate degree in biotechnology
- Masters in systems and synthetic biology from Imperial College London
- Doctor of Sciences degree from ETH Zurich
- His past research has focused on engineering disease resistance in cassava, inventing a new method for sequencing circular DNA, and most recently, on discovering new aspects of plant chronobiology
- Active science communicator
- Emerging leader in the Open Science movement
- Advocate for greater equity, diversity, & inclusion in science
- Previously served as an Early Career Advisor to eLife
- BioRxiv affiliate
